First, you'll need a clean, stainless steel pot to boil and sterilize your solution. I boil a full pot of water before using the saucepan for my saline solution to ensure that it's sterile. Saline can be used to help wash out uncomplicated cuts and wounds. Pouring saline on a wound can help clear away foreign material and bacteria, reducing the likelihood of infection. Normal saline solution will not sting or burn a wound.

Baking soda enhances the solution's ability to thin mucus, however, making it more effective. When used properly, saline has many potential benefits. You can save a little money by making your own saline at home.

Making a Saline Solution

Most nasal rinses dry out your nasal passageways and can cause more pain, bleeding, or general discomfort if used more often than this. A neti pot or nasal bulb can make nasal irrigation easier. You can also use things from around your house such as a turkey baster or a squirt bottle. Just make sure to wash these items thoroughly with hot, soapy water or run them through the dishwasher.
